South Walton Artificial Reef Brings Fun Underwater

swara7sm

We know that relaxing on the beach is fun, but sometimes our guests like to enjoy some soft adventure, including standup paddle boarding, kayaking, and snorkeling. Thanks to the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA), there will be more options for fun underwater off Grayton Beach along Scenic Hwy 30A.

This month, SWARA deployed the first half of 58 artificial reef structures off of Grayton Beach State Park. This is the first of several snorkel and fishing reefs planned that will span across south Walton County.

Each reef structure is constructed with limestone rocks embedded in 5 foot diameter concrete plates. Each reef features a 10? diameter fiberglass piling sunk deep in the seabed. The structures are not more than 10 feet tall, and abide by the minimum authorized depth clearance of 6 feet at mean low water (MLW). The design is geared for snorkelers to be able to view marine life not too far from shore.

When complete, the full reef will be shaped like a sea turtle and provide a home for many living organisms and marine life. Until then, we know our guests will be content relaxing on the beach, frolicking in the surf and enjoying the area’s rare coastal dune lakes.
